Sinopse
The present volume contains a total of eight articles which, in their thematic diversity, demonstrate the multiplicity of possible analyses to the Egyptian temple as an object of study. Among the different issues addressed, special attention is paid to the virtual reconstruction of certain areas of the temple of Karnak, as well as to the accessibility of sorne of its spaces by ritualists and the population in general. The example of the site of Sikait, in the Eastern Desert, then allows for an analysis of the architecture of the different cult spaces of this important Roman mining centre. The study of the parietal inscriptions of the Graeco-Roman temples reveals the use of different theologies recreated through both texts and images. In the New Kingdom, the decoration of the Theban temples on the West Bank allows us to explore aspects as diverse as the essential functionality of sorne of the motifs represented, in the specific case of the so-called 1 historical reliefs' of Deir el-Bahari, and the observation of intertextual practices, which sometimes even date back to testimonies from the Old Kingdom. Finally, the study of the priesthood of Memphis and the family lineages of its high priests during the Late Egyptian period brings us closer to the personnel responsible for the cultic and organisational tasks of the temple domains.
SYNOPSIS The present collection, Nólë Hyarmenillo (‘Lore from the South' in Quenya), features essays written by Spanish and Portuguese scholars on diverse topics related to Tolkien and his legendarium, ranging from an analysis of film posters and adaptations, to studies of comparative literature, ecocritical analysis and the role and impact of Tolkien's works in contemporary subculture. As such, the anthology also reflects the growing bonds between two national communities of scholars, who over the past decade have consolidated research on Tolkien's legendarium at various large universities on the Iberian peninsula.
Synopsis Carved ivory was one of the first commodities exported from Africa to Europe. Ivory artifacts from Atlantic Africa figured in cabinets of curiosities and were used in everyday life. The hybridism of some of this corpus has sparked lively debate among researchers and collectors about provenance, dating, and meaning. African ivories in the Atlantic World, 1400-1900 addresses the subject in its different dimensions. Priority is given to the African contexts of production and use. Circulation is approached in the scope of trade in raw ivory, a topic usually subsumed by the historiography of the Atlantic slave trade. Finally, some of the paths taken by carved and raw African ivory to Europe and South America are identified and the current legal status of this commerce is discussed. Table of contents | Índice
SYNOPSIS The former Portuguese-ruled Macau has been a multi-ethnic/national rendezvous attracting people from different origins and serving as a stage for them to perform manifold roles. Through time, countless Chinese and foreign people have left indelible footprints along with the rendition of its disparate “visages”. This speck of land was once a religious bastion for the propagation of Christianity, a springboard for adventurers, and a haven for pirates and fugitives. It was also an opium depot, a slave trade centre, a gambling hotbed, and not least, an arena for the Sino-Portuguese power struggle. Yet, at times it was a sanctuary for the destitute, and a permanent shelter for the displaced. This book throws light on remarkable midway sojourners, whose significant presence was imprinted in history even though they appeared in Macau briefly for various purposes in the midst of cataclysmic vicissitudes in China. Central to the discussion are an invincible pirate king, an ardent anti-opium statesman, a reformist gentry-merchant, an impoverished musician, and a diasporized educationalist. Likewise, two controversial historians, a high-handed colonial governor, and a revengeful colonel stamped their abiding marks at a specific time in the colony’s history. Inextricably entwined with Macau’s socio-political evolution, some of these personages have contributed to the rich culture of this bewitching city. INDEX Preface and acknowledgements
