This course fulfills the faculty core requirement for global citizenship and counts for the personal cv Pre-requisites: students must have the first cycle of studies (licenciatura) and make an inscription online in the centro de história website This course will introduce students to israel, its culture and people, from the birth of zionism in nineteenth century europe to the creation of the state of israel in 1947 and to the present. Through literature (fiction and non-fiction), historical documents, music and films, we will look at some of the most important issues of israeli society: the conflicts between religious and secular israelis, palestinians and israelis, the christian minority, as well as popular culture and the aspirations of young israelis. The course will be of interest to students of history, religion, international studies, those planning to go to Israel and/or concerned with global issues and other cultures.
